Brundle: Russell Must View Antonelli as a Formidable Title Rival

According to Martin Brundle, George Russell should consider his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli a significant threat, akin to Lewis Hamilton at the height of his career, as the two drivers engage in an emerging title battle. Mercedes has dominated the start of the season, securing victories in the first three races, with Antonelli surprisingly holding a nine-point lead over Russell. The 19-year-old Italian has benefited from fortunate circumstances, including a timely safety car at the Japanese Grand Prix, which enabled him to overtake Russell and achieve his second consecutive win. Russell, who was favored to win the title before the season began, must now reassess his strategy. Having spent three years with Williams before joining Mercedes in 2022, Russell was previously paired with Lewis Hamilton before the seven-time world champion left for Ferrari in 2025. Brundle stated on The F1 Show podcast, 'If I were George, I'd be more concerned after three races than I was at the beginning of the season.' Brundle emphasized that Russell must treat Antonelli as a serious title contender, comparable to Hamilton in his prime, in order to secure the championship. Antonelli's performance has been impressive, despite a crash on the opening weekend of the season, and Brundle believes Russell's experience will ultimately give him an edge. However, Brundle has been impressed by Antonelli's pace, and the young driver's ability to bounce back from setbacks has been notable. The championship battle between Russell and Antonelli is expected to continue, with the Miami Grand Prix, the season's second Sprint weekend, scheduled for May 1-3.
