Southampton continued to climb the Championship table with a hard-fought 2-1 win over fellow play-off contenders Derby at St Mary's. The Saints came from behind, with second-half goals from Leo Scienza and Taylor Harwood-Bellis canceling out Carlton Morris' earlier strike, extending their unbeaten streak to 17 games. The match began with a flurry of activity as Scienza created an early chance for Tom Fellows, whose heavy touch prevented him from shooting. Derby were forced to make a substitution in the ninth minute, with Bobby Clark limping off to be replaced by Oscar Fraulo.
Despite this, the Rams showed intent, with Morris and Max Johnston combining in a smart exchange that saw the latter break clear down the left channel before shooting into the side netting. The Saints then created a chance involving Casper Jander and Ross Stewart, but Finn Azaz's shot was straight at Richard O'Donnell.
Derby were without the injured Patrick Agyemang, and Morris was tasked with leading the line in his absence. He scored an unlikely opening goal when Joe Ward's corner deflected off Jander and dropped to him at the far post.
The Saints sought a quick reply, with Harwood-Bellis nodding Ryan Manning's free-kick wide of the post. In the second half, Scienza laid on a chance for James Bree, who sliced his shot wide, and another chance went begging when Fellows headed Manning's cross over the bar from close range. Derby had a rare attack, but Daniel Peretz saved Sammie Szmodics' 20-yard shot. The Saints eventually got the goal they deserved when Scienza finished off a flowing move by curling into the far corner after Jander and Azaz had created the opening.
St Mary's erupted again when Saints went ahead, with Harwood-Bellis connecting perfectly with another Manning free-kick to head beyond O'Donnell. Derby's John Eustace made changes in an attempt to find a way back into the game, but the Saints remained resolute, with Harwood-Bellis reacting superbly to block Morris' effort from the edge of the six-yard box. The win leaves the Saints unbeaten since January 17. Southampton's Tonda Eckert praised his team's performance, saying it was 'outstanding' and that the boys had been 'absolutely outstanding' throughout the match.
Derby's John Eustace reflected on the season, saying that the first 10 games were always going to be difficult, but his team had progressed and would go again next week.
