Smith Makes Impressive Comeback with Century in Surrey's Draw Against Warwickshire

Jamie Smith made a remarkable recovery from his struggles in the Ashes series with a century, helping Surrey secure a draw in their County Championship season opener against Warwickshire. Smith, who averaged a modest 23.44 in the five Tests in Australia, reminded England selectors of his capabilities with a 132-run knock at No 3 in Surrey's second-innings total of 447-4 at Edgbaston. Despite still trailing by 47 runs with three wickets down at the start of day four, following Warwickshire's massive first-innings total of 544, Smith's century, combined with Dan Lawrence's 161, ensured the match ended in a stalemate. The pair put on 217 runs for the fourth wicket. Elsewhere in Division One, draws were played out between Somerset and Nottinghamshire at Taunton, and Glamorgan and Yorkshire in Cardiff, while Sussex secured a win on the road at Leicestershire. James Rew, a potential rival for Smith's spot as wicketkeeper in the England Test team, also scored a second-innings hundred for Somerset, adding 14 to his overnight 108 not out, and Tom Kohler-Cadmore achieved a century as well. Somerset ultimately declared on 407-5, setting Nottinghamshire a target of 417 to win. Nottinghamshire comfortably held out for a draw, reaching 140-3 through 45 overs, with opener Ben Slater top-scoring with 60. Yorkshire had a more nervous finish in their match with Glamorgan, holding out on the final evening with 239-7 from 67.4 overs after being set 295 to win. Glamorgan had earlier declared on 218-5, with Colin Ingram following up his first-innings ton to top-score with 75, before seeking wickets. Leg-spinner Mason Crane claimed another three wickets to reduce Yorkshire to 139-3, but Adam Lyth proved a thorn in their side with a crucial 97. His wicket, three short of his century, gave Glamorgan renewed hope at 174-5, and while they added a couple more scalps before the close, they ultimately ran out of overs. Sussex joined Essex as the only top-tier teams to register a win on the opening week, clinching a 222-run victory over Leicestershire. The hosts, resuming on 125-5, were eventually bowled out for 258 after some early resistance from Stephen Eskinazi and Ben Cox in a century stand for the sixth wicket. Seamer Henry Crocombe took 4-36 to finish with match figures of 9-69, as Sussex immediately wiped out their 12-point deduction from the ECB with the victory, putting them 10 points to the good. In Division Two, Middlesex triumphed by an innings and 14 runs over Gloucestershire at Lord's, taking their last seven wickets for 83 runs on day four. Elsewhere, England's record wicket-taker, James Anderson, missed out on victory in his first match as Lancashire's first-class captain by a single wicket. Northamptonshire looked certain to succumb but their tail hung on valiantly for the draw. Anderson removed Lewis McManus and Louis Kimber to put his side within one ball of victory, but nobody could get the best of a battling George Bartlett, who ended up 95 not out for his four-and-a-half-hour rearguard that saved his side. Durham ran out of time to force home their advantage over Kent after losing the third day's play at Chester-le-Street to Storm Dave. Declaring on 218-9 with a lead of 356, they removed under-fire England opener Zak Crawley for 20 but finished five wickets short of finishing the job. Tawanda Muyeye hit an unbeaten 109 as Kent reached stumps on 254-5 from their 57 overs. Worcestershire also held on for a draw at Derbyshire, closing on 314-7 after being forced to follow on, with England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir claiming 1-55 from his 27 overs, but they couldn't quite get their side over the line.
