Mateta Makes Impressive Return as Crystal Palace Dominates Fiorentina

Jean-Philippe Mateta celebrated his return to the starting lineup with a goal, his first since the beginning of the year, as Crystal Palace took a significant step towards the Conference League semi-finals with a resounding 3-0 victory over Fiorentina. Mateta, who had not started a game since January 25, scored from the penalty spot, before Tyrick Mitchell capitalized on a defensive error by Fiorentina to score the second goal. Ismaila Sarr sealed the win with a late goal, putting Palace in a strong position ahead of the second leg in Florence. This win marked the first time Palace had scored three goals at Selhurst Park since November, extending their unbeaten run to five games and seven Conference League matches without a loss. The team's lineup included Henderson, Richards, Lacroix, Canvot, Munoz, Wharton, Kamada, Mitchell, Sarr, Guessand, and Mateta, with Pino, Lerma, Hughes, and Johnson coming on as substitutes. Kamada was named the Player of the Match. Following a three-week break, Palace returned with renewed energy, which paid off as they dominated Fiorentina from the start. The intense beginning culminated in a penalty kick for Palace after Dodo's late challenge on Evann Guessand, which Mateta converted. Minutes later, Mitchell scored the second goal after David de Gea saved Mateta's initial effort. Fiorentina had a brief spell of threat in the second half but ultimately could not overcome Palace's strong start. Sarr's late goal sealed Fiorentina's fate. In a post-match interview, Mateta expressed his happiness with the win and his goal, stating, 'What a night. It's been a long time, I didn't play, I didn't start. I'm very happy and very happy my guy (Mitchell) scored as well.' Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner praised Mateta, saying, 'I think that's what JP deserves. He always gives 100 per cent effort to the team, 100 per cent effort for Crystal Palace.' Glasner also commended the team's performance, especially in the first half and the final 20 minutes of the game, highlighting the great energy from both the team and the fans at Selhurst Park.
