Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, made history with a successful title defense, following his playoff victory over Justin Rose the previous year, which made him the sixth player to achieve a career Grand Slam and the first since Tiger Woods. Despite being the pre-tournament favorite to win for the third time, Scottie Scheffler, the world's number one golfer, entered the week without a top-10 finish in his last three PGA Tour starts.
McIlroy posted a one-under 71 to finish a shot ahead of Scottie Scheffler, with Tyrrell Hatton a further stroke back in tied-third alongside Justin Rose, Cameron Young, and Russell Henley. The top 10 was rounded off by Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns in seventh place, and Max Homa and Xander Schauffele.
Patrick Reed finished five under with a final-round 73, while Shane Lowry slipped out of contention after an eight-over 80. The Masters, the first of four men's golf majors in as many months, featured 91 players in the field. The PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open will follow.
The PGA Tour will head to South Carolina for the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island, where Justin Thomas will return as defending champion. The next men's major, the PGA Championship, will be held from May 14-17 at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania, and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
