Tom Watson Criticizes PGA Tour for Allowing LIV Golf Defectors to Return

Golf legend Tom Watson has spoken out against the PGA Tour's decision to permit players who defected to the LIV Golf League to rejoin the tour. The PGA Tour recently introduced a program offering a select group of top performers a pathway to return, with Brooks Koepka taking advantage of the opportunity after parting ways with the Saudi-backed circuit. As part of his reinstatement, Koepka agreed to make a $5 million charitable donation. Patrick Reed is also set to return to the PGA Tour after leaving LIV Golf. Watson expressed his disapproval, stating that the tour had reneged on its promise to ban players who left for LIV Golf. He believes that players who want to rejoin the PGA Tour should be required to play on the Korn Ferry Tour for a year to qualify. The Returning Member Program, created by PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, was also offered to other notable players, including Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Cameron Smith, who remain with LIV Golf. Watson emphasized the importance of protecting sponsors, who rely on top players to promote their tournaments. Reed, who will return to the PGA Tour after serving a one-year suspension, stated that he wanted to compete against the best players in the world and experience the adrenaline of playing on the PGA Tour.
