Magsayo Edges Closer to Zuffa Title Contention with Victory Over McCrory
Andres Cortes and Mark Magsayo both achieved impressive victories at Zuffa Boxing 05 in Las Vegas, setting the stage for a potential future clash between the two lightweight contenders. Cortes maintained his unbeaten record with a points victory over Eridson Garcia in the main event, while former featherweight world champion Magsayo announced his presence as a title threat in his new weight class with a knockout win over Feargal McCrory. The evening also saw a significant upset as Tony Hirsch Jr scored a surprise win over the highly-touted Robert Meriwether III, and featherweight Alexis De la Cerda delivered an early contender for Zuffa Boxing knockout of the year. Las Vegas native Cortes claimed a dominant decision victory in his hometown, defeating Dominican contender Garcia over 10 rounds. Cortes kept Garcia guessing by switching between range and close combat, landing two or three-punch combinations before evading Garcia's attempted counters. As the fight progressed, Cortes changed tactics and opted to close the distance, with Garcia struggling to keep up. By the mid-point, Cortes had gained confidence, and his opponent had no answer whenever they fought on the inside. Cortes comfortably negotiated the final rounds to claim a decisive decision victory, improving his record to 25-0. This victory puts Cortes firmly in the mix as the championship picture in the Zuffa Boxing lightweight division begins to take shape. In the co-main event, Magsayo successfully transitioned to the lightweight division with a statement finish against Ireland's McCrory. Magsayo made his power known early, landing two thumping right hands in the opening round. While McCrory attempted to step into range, he struggled to connect with meaningful shots as Magsayo eased into the contest. Magsayo continued to outclass McCrory through the second and third rounds and came close to stopping the Irishman in the fourth with a series of clean, hard shots. After McCrory's corner warned him they would pull him out if he continued to take damage, the call came 21 seconds into the fifth round, following more power shots from Magsayo. This left Magsayo elated as he celebrated a stoppage victory in his first Zuffa Boxing appearance. The most memorable moment of the night came when featherweight De La Cerda produced a stunning one-punch knockout of Ervin Fuller III with a short right hook in the third round. Elsewhere, Merriweather suffered a surprise first defeat of his professional career, losing a split decision to Tony Hirsch Jr in their lightweight contest.
