Tom Watson Slams PGA Tour for Allowing LIV Golf Defectors to Return

Golf legend Tom Watson has expressed disappointment with the PGA Tour's decision to permit players who defected to the LIV Golf League to rejoin the tour. The PGA Tour introduced a program offering a pathway back for select 'elite performers', with Brooks Koepka taking advantage of the initiative after parting ways with the Saudi-backed circuit. Koepka made a $5m charitable donation as part of his reinstatement. Watson criticized the tour, stating that players who left for LIV Golf should have been banned for life. He suggested that players who wish to return to the PGA Tour should be required to play the Korn Ferry Tour for a year to qualify. The Returning Member Program was also offered to other notable players, including Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau, who remain with LIV Golf. Patrick Reed, who recently left LIV Golf, is set to return to the PGA Tour after serving a one-year suspension. Watson emphasized that the players who left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf violated the primary rule of protecting sponsors, which is essential for the tour's success. Reed, on the other hand, stated that he wanted to return to the PGA Tour to compete against the best players in the world and experience the adrenaline of playing on the tour.
