Glasgow's Champions Cup Hopes Shattered by Toulon in Quarter-Final

Glasgow Warriors' aspirations of reaching their maiden Investec Champions Cup semi-final were dashed as they succumbed to a 22-19 defeat at the hands of RC Toulon at Scotstoun. Despite entering the match as slight favorites, courtesy of their impressive home form and Toulon's domestic struggles, Franco Smith's side were outdone by the three-time European champions. The visitors secured a tumultuous 4-3 try victory, setting up a last-four showdown against either Leinster or Sale. A late change to Glasgow's lineup saw Macenzzie Duncan replace the injured Max Williamson on the bench. The home side initially took the lead after a cautious start, with Toulon accumulating penalties within their 22-yard line, allowing Warriors to capitalize. Alex Samuel secured the lineout, finding Ben Afshar, whose pass to Stafford McDowall resulted in the first try of the match. However, Toulon promptly responded, with Ben White's long pass finding Jeremy Sinzelle, who then moved the ball to Gael Drean for the score. A trademark run by Kyle Steyn propelled Glasgow back into Toulon territory, but Sione Tuipulotu was halted just short of the line after a series of pick-and-go attempts. Following a warning from referee Karl Dickson for their ill-discipline, Junior Kpoku was shown a yellow card, and Glasgow swiftly exploited the numerical advantage. McDowall's brilliant pass found Ollie Smith, allowing the winger to score. The hosts soon found themselves on the back foot, with Jean-Baptiste Gros scoring a converted try to level the scoreboard at 12-12. Toulon then took the lead for the first time, with Melvyn Jaminet passing to Drean, who used his pace to score his second try. Glasgow regained the lead in the second half, with Gregor Hiddleston stretching for the line after the lineout maul seemed to be drifting into touch. The French side enjoyed a period of pressure close to the Glasgow line but were eventually repelled, with the defence standing firm before winning a penalty to ease the danger. Toulon eventually broke through, with Nacho Brex picking a gap and bursting through to power to the line. Warriors enjoyed one final surge but were forced into a turnover, sealing Toulon's win. In another quarter-final match, Leinster Rugby secured a 43-13 victory over Sale Sharks, booking their place in the Investec Champions Cup semi-finals, where they will face Toulon. Leinster got off to a perfect start, with hooker Dan Sheehan crashing over to score a 10th-minute try, and Harry Byrne adding the conversion. Sale reduced the deficit with a penalty from George Ford but were down to 14 men after Dan du Preez was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on. Full-back Hugo Keenan stretched Leinster's lead with a second try, and despite a second Ford penalty, the hosts continued to dominate, with Ryan Baird, Rieko Ioane, and Tommy O'Brien crossing for tries. Sale replacement Alex Willis touched down in the corner, but a Byrne penalty and a converted Jamie Osborne try sealed a convincing win for Leinster.
