Severe Weather from Storm Dave Causes Damage to Durham Cricket Ground

Durham's cricket stadium has suffered damage due to Storm Dave, resulting in the abandonment of day three of the County Championship Division Two match against Kent. Initially, spectators were advised to stay away due to safety concerns. A scaffolding platform holding a sightscreen was knocked over, and fencing was damaged, while a movable cover ended up in the stands at Chester-le-Street. The decision to postpone play was made early on Sunday due to the adverse weather conditions and a wet pitch, caused by the covers being blown away and leaving the surface exposed to rain. Although spectators were allowed to return after 1 pm, no cricket was played. Visiting head coach Adam Hollioake described the scene as resembling a war zone, citing the substantial amount of water on the wicket as the primary reason for the delay. Storm Dave brought heavy rain, snow, and strong winds to parts of the UK, with yellow warnings in place in northern England, Scotland, and Wales, although conditions are expected to improve. Despite the challenges, Durham is currently leading Kent by 221 runs in their second innings, with England hopeful Emilio Gay having scored a century in the first innings. The ground is set to host several senior England matches this summer, including a women's ODI against New Zealand and men's games against India and Sri Lanka.
