Tonda Eckert: The Mastermind Behind Southampton's Resurgence

Since taking the helm, Tonda Eckert has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for Southampton, transforming the team from a 21st-place finish in the Championship to a strong contender for the play-off spot and an FA Cup semi-finalist. Eckert's journey, however, has not been without its challenges, including a seven-game winless streak between December and January. Yet, the team has bounced back with nine wins in 12 unbeaten league matches and a stellar FA Cup run, defeating Arsenal in the quarter-finals. Despite these achievements, Eckert remains grounded, acknowledging that his accomplishments mean little until the end of the season. "Appreciation for winning games is nice, but it doesn't take you anywhere," he says. "The only time it matters is at the end of the season, once you're on vacation. Right now, it doesn't mean anything." Eckert's drive and determination have been instrumental in reinstilling belief in a squad that had struggled to win games in 18 months following a disastrous relegation from the Premier League. At just 32, Eckert took on his first senior management role, initially on an interim basis, and has since led the team to significant improvements. "I wish it were easy to come off a bad season and have things click into place," he notes. "Sometimes, you just need a little time for the group to grow together and connect all the parts." With a renewed sense of confidence and a bit more time together, the team has started to thrive. Even amidst a slump around the turn of the year, Eckert retained faith that things would turn around. "Once you lose belief, you're done," he emphasizes. "But we always had confidence in each other. You always find that belief and trust in the boys." Eckert's coaching career, which includes stints at German academies like Koln, RB Leipzig, and Bayern Munich, as well as a spell as assistant manager at Barnsley, has prepared him for this challenge. "I've enjoyed every single day at this football club," he says. "As a head coach, you need to live up to the standards you demand every single day. You need to represent what you ask for, with a smile and in a positive way, but also be willing to sacrifice and be humble." With seven crucial games remaining, including a trip to Wrexham on Tuesday night, Southampton fans will be hoping Eckert's drive and determination will propel the team into the play-offs by the end of the season. "You get into football for these moments," Eckert says. "We live for them and enjoy them. You prepare from day one for these types of decisive games when the pressure comes. You have to have that deep confidence to win every single game, whoever it is against."
