F1 drivers and teams utilize unexpected April break
The cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix due to the Middle East conflict has resulted in a mandatory pause in the Formula 1 season. With no racing scheduled for April, the sport has embarked on a five-week break, providing teams and drivers with an unexpected opportunity to regroup and refocus. Following an intense pre-season and the first three rounds of the 2026 campaign, the grid's 11 teams are taking advantage of this extended break to fine-tune their cars, address technical issues, and prepare for the remainder of the season. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella welcomed the pause, stating that it allows staff to catch their breath after an intense winter and provides an opportunity for the team to prepare for the upcoming races. The break has also given teams the chance to work on car development, with the Miami Grand Prix, scheduled for May 1-3, taking on added significance as the first race back after the extended break. Drivers, too, are utilizing this time to work on their fitness, spend time on simulators, and address any early-season issues. The pause has also provided an opportunity for teams to focus on development without the restrictions of the summer and winter breaks, when factories are required to shut down. With the season set to resume in Miami, teams are eager to make the most of this unexpected break and come back stronger, with Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur suggesting that 'a new championship will start' from Miami. The break has also allowed for discussions over potential regulation tweaks, with stakeholders set to meet to assess the new rules and determine whether any refinements are required.
