Grey Dawning Outruns Solness in Thrilling Melling Chase

In a masterful display of tactics, Grey Dawning successfully dropped back in distance to outmaneuver the long-time leader Solness in the JCB Melling Chase at Aintree. Trained by Joseph O'Brien, Solness took the early lead, running from the front and asserting his dominance down the back straight. However, Dan Skelton's Grey Dawning remained in contention, waiting for the perfect moment to launch his challenge. With two fences to go, Harry Skelton moved Grey Dawning to the front, and despite a fierce battle with Solness, his stamina ultimately paid off, securing a narrow neck victory. Skelton reflected on the decision to shorten the distance, stating, 'We were doing well but not quite winning, so we had to change things and try something different.' The winning trainer praised the performance of both horses, saying, 'All credit to Solness - being in front the whole way, what a horse to put in a run like that.' Jockey J J Slevin was proud of Solness's performance in defeat, describing it as 'a great run.' Henry de Bromhead attributed the defeat of Ryanair Chase winner Heart Wood to the shorter distance and sharper track, saying, 'It all just happened a bit quick.' Jo Tizzard was pleased with JPR One's fourth-place finish, noting that he 'comes up a bit shy in Grade Ones.' The day was also marked by a 'hollow victory' for Gold Dancer, who suffered a fatal injury after winning the William Hill Mildmay Novices' Chase.
