French Court Rejects Cardiff's £100m Compensation Claim Over Emiliano Sala's Fatal Plane Crash

A French commercial court has dismissed Cardiff City's claim for over £100m in compensation following the tragic death of footballer Emiliano Sala in a plane crash in the English Channel in January 2019. Sala was traveling to join Cardiff from Nantes when the aircraft, piloted by David Ibbotson, crashed, resulting in the loss of both lives. Cardiff had sought damages, alleging that Nantes was responsible for the accident due to their involvement in arranging the flight through agent Willie McKay. However, the court ruled in favor of Nantes, stating that they were not at fault and that Cardiff did not suffer reputational damage. The court also ordered Cardiff to pay over £400,000 to Nantes. Cardiff had argued that Sala's presence could have prevented the team's relegation from the Premier League, which they believed would have resulted in significant financial losses. The ruling comes after a lengthy legal process, during which Cardiff was also ordered by FIFA to pay Nantes the outstanding transfer fee for Sala, totaling €15m. A separate criminal case resulted in the conviction of David Henderson, who organized the fatal flight, for recklessly endangering the safety of an aircraft. Henderson was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in the tragedy. Cardiff expressed disappointment with the court's decision, stating that they had sought transparency and accountability in the matter, and that the ruling did not uphold the principles of integrity and safety in professional football.
