Peters to End Hull KR Tenure and Take Helm at PNG Chiefs

Willie Peters is set to bring his historic tenure as Hull KR head coach to a close at the end of the current Super League season, marking the end of an era that saw the team achieve unparalleled success. Since his appointment in 2023, Peters has masterminded a period of triumph, culminating in the club's first trophy in 40 years with their 2025 Challenge Cup final victory. This achievement was soon followed by the team securing the League Leaders' Shield and the Super League Grand Final, earning them a treble winners title. The Robins' success continued with a resounding 30-24 win over the Brisbane Broncos in February, as they captured their first World Club Challenge and solidified their position at the pinnacle of the sport. Peters has revealed that he will be leaving to pursue coaching opportunities in the NRL, and it has been confirmed that he will become the inaugural head coach of the new PNG Chiefs franchise. "My desire to coach in the NRL is well-documented, but that doesn't make this decision any easier," Peters stated. "I'm grateful to the board, players, and staff at Sewell Group Craven Park for their support during my four-year tenure, which has been instrumental in my growth as a coach and a person. I'd also like to extend my thanks to the incredible fans who have welcomed me and my family since our arrival; Hull KR and the East Hull community will always hold a special place in our hearts." Following his appointment with the PNG Chiefs, Peters expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity, saying, "I believe that what we build with the PNG Chiefs can have a lasting impact on the lives of Papua New Guineans for generations to come. This opportunity extends beyond rugby league, and I feel fortunate to be a part of it." A statement from Hull KR expressed the club's gratitude to Peters for his achievements during his time as head coach, acknowledging that his tenure is not yet over. "Willie will depart with our best wishes after four years as the most successful coach in our modern history, having taken us to the pinnacle of the sport as world champions," the statement read. "The club appreciates the advance notice of his decision, which allows us ample time to assess all options and find the best candidate to succeed him. Attracting interest from around the world is a testament to the club and the culture we're building, and we see it as a positive reflection of our elite sports club. For now, our focus remains on the 2026 season, where we have much to achieve." Hull KR owner Neil Hudgell added, "As the coach of the World Club champions, Willie deserves to leave on his own terms, with our respect, appreciation, and best wishes. He led us to the most successful season in Hull rugby league history in 2025, and for the remainder of this year, he will continue to drive a culture that demands success."
