Bamford: Life Without Football Feels Off-Kilter

"Life doesn't feel quite right when you're not playing football," says Patrick Bamford, reflecting on a couple of challenging years that culminated in a season with limited appearances for Leeds United, ultimately leading to his release after the team's promotion to the Premier League. Following his release, Bamford found himself without a club for several months. "I kept busy by training every morning, whether in the gym, on the pitch, or on the track," the 32-year-old striker tells Sky Sports. Outside of training, Bamford occupied his time with golf until the weather turned cold and spent quality time with his family. "Despite never being at a loose end, there was always this underlying desire to get back to playing professionally," he admits. Bamford had a stint training with Coventry City but wasn't signed, a move that eventually led him to Sheffield United, a club with which he had a complicated past, especially considering a social media incident last April where he was filmed leading a chant against the Blades and their manager Chris Wilder during Leeds' promotion celebrations. However, Bamford put the past behind him and thrived with Sheffield United, scoring five Championship goals in his first six starts. "It's been a really smooth transition, which has been a big help. As a striker, you rely a lot on your teammates, and the lads here have been fantastic," Bamford says, attributing his success to the hard work he put in during his time off and the couple of weeks he spent training with Coventry to get up to speed. While Bamford doesn't believe the time off gave him a new lease on life at 32, he feels it changed his perspective slightly. "I'm not sure if the break helped me physically, but mentally, I'm definitely enjoying the game more. Being back in the mix and feeling part of it again has given me an extra boost," he reflects. "The biggest thing I realized was how much I missed playing football. It's not just about everything else; I genuinely enjoy the game, which is important to me." Bamford turned down interest from other clubs in January to sign an 18-month contract with Sheffield United, feeling it's the right place for him to continue his football journey. "Once I settled in so easily, it made sense to stay. I was enjoying my football and liked the plans the manager had for the club over the next 18 months. You play your best football when you're happy and comfortable, and that's exactly how I feel here. It was an easy decision," Bamford concludes.
