Gotterup Claims Season-Opening Sony Open Title After MacIntyre's Late Surge

American golfer Chris Gotterup kicked off the new PGA Tour season in style, carding three crucial birdies on the back nine to secure a six-under 64 and claim a two-stroke victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Gotterup, who was initially two shots behind, capitalized on a dramatic collapse by 54-hole leader Davis Riley and went on to birdie three of the last seven holes at a windy Waialae Country Club, maintaining his lead over the rest of the field. Scotland's Robert MacIntyre produced a stunning best-of-the-day 63 to finish in a share of fourth place, behind American trio Patrick Rodgers, Ryan Gerard, and Gotterup. This victory propelled Gotterup to 17th in the world rankings, a significant jump from his 195th position at the end of the previous year's Sony Open. 'I felt like I was in a good mindset this week, just happy to be here,' Gotterup said, reflecting on his third PGA Tour win. 'I was in control of my thoughts, which is crucial. I drove the ball well and made some important putts.' Gerard birdied his last two holes to finish alone in second with a 65, while Rodgers, who had been seeking his first PGA Tour victory, finally carded a birdie on the last hole to finish third with a 65. Riley, who began with a two-shot lead, struggled with three-putt bogeys on the sixth and seventh holes, followed by a wild tee shot that led to a double bogey on the eighth, ultimately failing to catch up. Gotterup sealed his victory with a 20-foot putt on the 12th hole, a 25-foot putt on the 13th, and a precise tee shot on the par-three 17th. Meanwhile, European Ryder Cup star MacIntyre made five birdies to reach the turn in 30 and picked up additional shots at the 15th and 18th to finish 12 under par for the week. England's Harry Hall claimed a share of sixth place with a 69, after starting the day two shots behind overnight leader Riley.
