Eric Ramsay Discusses His Journey to West Brom and Vision for the Club

Eric Ramsay's life has taken a dramatic turn over the past week, transforming from an off-season break with Minnesota United to preparing for his debut as West Brom's head coach in the Championship. In an interview with Sky Sports, the 34-year-old expressed his excitement about the new challenge, saying, "It's been a whirlwind, but as I hoped it would be, it’s been a really exciting start. It’s a brilliant football club and I’ve had a really warm welcome from the existing staff and support staff." Ramsay brings a wealth of experience, having coached at Swansea, Shrewsbury Town, Chelsea, and Manchester United. His time at Old Trafford, where he worked under multiple managers, provided him with invaluable insights into handling pressure and different coaching approaches. "No one hopes for that level of managerial churn, but as a young coach, it gave me a unique opportunity to observe different approaches in a very demanding environment," Ramsay said. "I learned a huge amount from watching how different managers dealt with pressure, and that experience has served me well since." Ramsay's experience in the MLS with Minnesota United has also prepared him for the Championship. He noted, "MLS is very competitive, very tight, and similar to the Championship in that every game feels winnable, or losable. Add in the travel, climate, and the fact it's the most multinational league in the world, and it becomes incredibly challenging." Despite being relatively young, Ramsay exudes confidence, which should alleviate concerns about his ability to lead West Brom. He stated, "Age is just a number. I've spent almost 14 years as a professional coach and I've always been considered young in the roles I've had. It's never been something I've thought about. What matters is the depth of experience underneath it, and in some cases, being younger can be an advantage." Ramsay is well aware that results will define his success at West Brom, which currently sits 18th in the Championship table. He has a clear vision for the club, emphasizing the importance of clarity, organization, and consistency. "Clarity and organisation is key," he said. "I want everyone to know exactly what's required of them, and I want the fans to know what to expect when they come to the stadium. You'll see a balance between control with and without the ball, and a team that looks connected." Only time will tell if Ramsay can translate his impressive words into results, but for now, his confidence and experience make a compelling case for his success at West Brom.
