The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) has launched an investigation into a dramatic low‑altitude flypast performed by two Airlink passenger jets just before the second Test between South Africa and New Zealand in Cape Town. The spectacle, which saw the aircraft skim within roughly 100 metres of the roof of the DHL Stadium, sparked a wave of safety concerns among spectators, aviation experts and the general public. In response, the regulator has secured flight‑data recordings from the aircraft, formally requested further documentation from Airlink, and announced that a comprehensive report—including any recommendations for future safety protocols—will be published once the review is finished.

According to the SACAA’s statement, it is "critical that we interrogate this past weekend's events … to determine if there were any safety concerns which warrant a review." The authority emphasized that its mandate is to ensure that all aerial activities over populated areas meet stringent safety standards, and that any deviation from accepted margins of error must be thoroughly examined. Airlink, the airline that operated the flyover, has already pulled its proposal for an additional display at an upcoming rugby match in Soweto.

The decision came after the regulator highlighted the need for a cautious approach while the investigation proceeds. The airline had initially planned three separate flyovers: the first in Johannesburg on August 22, the second – the one under scrutiny – in Cape Town on August 29, and a third slated for September 1 over Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium.

Both the Johannesburg and Cape Town events received the necessary approvals for special air events, but the September 1 application was withdrawn because forecast weather conditions were deemed unsuitable for a safe formation flight. The Cape Town flyover attracted an estimated crowd of about 56,000 fans who cheered loudly as the jets roared overhead. Video footage captured by spectators quickly spread across social media, prompting a lively debate about the balance between entertainment value and aviation safety.

While many praised the visual spectacle, a number of aviation professionals pointed out that the aircraft flew at an unusually low altitude, leaving little margin for error should any mechanical or human‑factor issue arise. In its defence, Airlink released a statement on Wednesday asserting that the manoeuvre had been meticulously planned and rehearsed. However, the recent Cape Town event was markedly lower and more dramatic than previous displays, drawing international attention and prompting experts to scrutinise whether the pilots maintained an adequate safety buffer.

The SACAA’s investigation will focus on several key aspects: the altitude and speed of the jets relative to the stadium structure, the adequacy of the pre‑flight risk assessment, the weather conditions at the time of the flyover, and the communication protocols between the pilots and air traffic control. The regulator will also evaluate whether the special‑event approvals granted to Airlink adhered to established safety criteria, and whether any procedural gaps need to be addressed to prevent future incidents. Should the investigation uncover any safety deficiencies, the SACAA is prepared to issue formal recommendations.

These could range from stricter altitude minimums for flyovers over large venues, enhanced coordination with local authorities, mandatory real‑time weather monitoring, or even a temporary suspension of such displays until airlines can demonstrate compliance with heightened safety standards. In the meantime, Airlink has voluntarily ceased plans for any further low‑altitude flyovers pending the outcome of the review. The airline’s decision reflects a cautious approach, aiming to preserve public confidence while the authority completes its assessment.
