The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has unveiled a comprehensive action plan aimed at tackling the concerns that have been raised about the playing surface at Lord's Cricket Ground. The pitch was labelled "unsatisfactory" by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following the 150th Test between England and New Zealand earlier this summer, a match that lasted just 165 overs and wrapped up in two and a half days – the second‑shortest Test ever recorded at the venue.
The controversy resurfaced during England's recent Test against Pakistan, when statistical analysis showed that the amount of lateral movement available to bowlers was actually greater than in the preceding New Zealand game. In that earlier contest, the measured deviation was roughly 0.7 degrees, whereas the Pakistan match saw the figure climb to about 0.85 degrees – the highest recorded movement on any UK pitch in the modern era, according to the data. Sky Sports Cricket analyst and former England captain Nasser Hussain echoed the criticism, stating on day four of the Pakistan Test that the surface had again proved "unsatisfactory" after three days of play.
He noted that the conditions on the final day – cloud cover, drizzle and artificial lighting – seemed to exacerbate the pitch's erratic behaviour. Hussain compared the two matches and highlighted the increase in movement, describing it as the most pronounced swing ever observed on English soil. In the off‑season, MCC ground staff had undertaken a series of intensive interventions to raise the quality of the wicket. They relaid the outfield, applied a high‑temperature steam treatment of roughly 200 °C to the soil in an attempt to eradicate pathogens, and carried out a range of other remedial measures.
Despite these efforts, the outcomes fell short of expectations, prompting the governing body to draft a new set of remedial actions that includes the possible introduction of drop‑in pitches. Former England and Middlesex batsman Eoin Morgan elaborated on the plan during a Sky Sports interview.
He stressed that the MCC views the situation with utmost seriousness, noting that Lord's reputation in the red‑ball arena has taken a noticeable hit this year. Morgan explained that the club intends to invest financially in sophisticated analysis, to guide the redevelopment of the playing surface.

While the pitch itself bears much of the blame for the extraordinary seam movement, other factors also played a role. On day three of the Pakistan Test, batting proved especially difficult.
England’s Emilio Gay was dismissed lbw by a low‑bouncing delivery from Pakistan’s Mohammad Abbas, a dismissal that underscored how the damp, cloud‑laden conditions made the surface behave unpredictably. Hussain suggested that the softness of the wicket combined with the traditional Dukes ball – which tends to leave indentations in a soft surface – and the slope of the ground created a nightmare for batsmen. England captain Joe Root, after securing the series‑clinching win, added his perspective on the Dukes ball.
He observed that the ball seemed to have a different lacquer on its seam this season, which might be affecting how it interacts with the pitch. Root speculated that a firmer ball could be denting the surface more, causing the seam to catch on those dents and generate additional movement. He also noted that the altered seam behaviour could be contributing to a higher rate of bat breakage among batsmen during practice sessions.
The MCC’s action plan therefore targets several fronts: improving the soil composition, introducing drop‑in pitches that can be prepared under controlled conditions, and collaborating with ball manufacturers to understand any changes in ball construction that could influence seam and swing.
