England have added uncapped Sussex fast bowler Henry Crocombe to their limited‑overs squads for the upcoming One‑Day International (ODI) series against Sri Lanka, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports. Crocombe has been in sensational form in the County Championship, recording back‑to‑back hat‑tricks in his two most recent matches, a feat that caught the attention of the national selectors and earned him a place among the senior England group.
The selection list also sees the exclusion of Brydon Carse, who is currently under investigation by the Cricket Regulator following an incident outside a Derby nightclub in August. Carse has already been omitted from the ODI and T20 squads and was previously withdrawn from the recent Test squads that faced Pakistan, meaning he will miss the entire white‑ball programme this month. Aneurin Donald, a prolific opening batsman for Derbyshire, receives his first call‑up to the senior England side and will be incorporated into the England T20 setup.
Donald has enjoyed a standout season in the Vitality Blast and also made a strong impression playing for the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, prompting the selectors to reward his consistent performances with an international debut. All‑rounder Sam Curran is sidelined with a groin injury, while Jacob Bethell is out with a knee problem.
However, Jamie Overton returns to the squad after missing the recent T20 and ODI series victories over India in July because of a quadriceps injury sustained during the Indian Premier League. Phil Salt also remains unavailable due to a right‑quadriceps strain. The series will continue with matches in Cardiff on 17 September and at Emirates Old Trafford on 19 September. Crocombe was initially drafted into England’s Test party during the New Zealand series in June when Sussex teammate Ollie Robinson suffered a knee niggle, although Crocombe did not get to play. The 24‑year‑old, who will move to Surrey from 2027, has already taken 49 wickets in 36 domestic 50‑over games and claimed 34 wickets in 35 T20 fixtures, bringing his total first‑class wicket tally to well over one hundred. His recent first‑class hat‑tricks came against Somerset and Essex, with one of the dismissals being Craig Overton, the twin brother of Jamie Overton.
Another uncapped Sussex player, spin‑bowling all‑rounder James Coles, remains in the England set‑up after earning his maiden call‑up for the India series a few months earlier. Both Crocombe and Coles will be eager to debut against Sri Lanka and use the opportunity to push for places on the winter tours to Pakistan, Australia and South Africa.
Brendon McCullum, now solely the white‑ball coach after being removed from the Test role following the 2‑1 series loss to New Zealand, can call upon Test captain Joe Root for the ODIs, as England have decided not to rest him for the series. Before facing Sri Lanka, England aim to complete a 3‑0 Test sweep of Pakistan in Birmingham starting 9 September, with the first two Tests already won convincingly at Headingley and Lord’s. After the home summer, England will travel to Pakistan in October for an ODI tri‑series that also features Sri Lanka, before heading to Australia in November for a three‑match ODI series and a five‑match T20 series.
