Scottie Scheffler battled through a tense final round against Viktor Hovland to finish the PGA Tour season in spectacular fashion, clinching the FedExCup title at the Tour Championship. After trailing by three strokes early on Sunday at East Lake Golf Club, Scheffler turned the tables with a brilliant performance that featured six birdies and only two bogeys, delivering a four‑under‑par 66 to surge ahead of his competitors. The world No. 1 ended the tournament at 16 under par, three strokes clear of Hovland, who had briefly held the lead at several points during the closing day.
Scheffler's victory earned him a $10 million first‑place prize and placed him in an elite group alongside Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods as the only golfers to win the FedExCup more than once. Hovland posted a final‑round 72 to settle for second place, ahead of Ryan Gerard.
McIlroy, after a rocky start that included three bogeys in his first five holes, recovered to card a one‑under‑par 69, sharing the fourth‑place position with a group of players tied at 11 under: Ludvig Åberg, Chris Gotterup, Russell Henley, Jacob Bridgeman, first‑round leader Min Woo Lee and England’s Alex Fitzpatrick. Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood trailed just one shot behind that pack.
Scheffler set the tone early, launching his tee shot on the second hole to within tap‑in range, which put him just one stroke behind Hovland after the Norwegian was forced to lay up from the rough and subsequently made a bogey. Overnight co‑leader Gerard stumbled with a double‑bogey on the first hole and never recovered the lead. Scheffler responded by sinking a 24‑foot birdie putt on the fourth, drawing level with Hovland at 14 under.
The American continued to press his advantage, saving par from eight feet on the fifth hole but missing an opportunity on the adjacent par‑five. He then erased a bogey that had crept in on the seventh by holing a seven‑foot birdie putt on the eighth. Hovland answered with a short‑range birdie on the same hole, briefly retaking the outright lead at 15 under.
However, Scheffler, playing two groups ahead, answered with a birdie to start his back nine and added another from five feet on the 13th, regaining the top spot. Both competitors were tied after Scheffler’s tee shot missed the fairway on the 14th, resulting in a bogey, while Gotterup squandered a 10‑foot chance to get within one. Hovland then dropped a shot on the 13th, slipping a stroke behind with five holes to play. He managed an impressive up‑and‑down from the 14th fairway to stay at 14 under, but Scheffler seized control by recovering from a bunker off the 16th tee and sinking a 12‑foot birdie, effectively doubling his lead.
Scheffler two‑putted the 17th and, after being forced to lay up, safely parred the final hole, sealing his third PGA Tour win of the season and his second FedExCup Playoffs victory. The triumph also pushed him past Tiger Woods on the all‑time career earnings list for the PGA Tour, and his 22 PGA Tour titles over the past five seasons are double that of any other player in the same period.
Reflecting on his performance, Scheffler said, "Today was a day I was fortunate to get off to a good start and was able to make some birdies late in the round to seal the deal. I'm very proud of fighting back and having some good finishes and even giving myself some chances to win with some of those poor starts." Hovland added, "I don't think he [Scheffler] is trying to do too much with it. He knows that he's got an edge on most guys out here, so he doesn't have to do anything crazy.
He can play smart and just kind of pick his spots, stay in it constantly. It wasn't like anybody else really played all that great in contention. That's what you see – a lot of guys just gagging and throwing up. That's where he just stays in it and shoots a nice score and that gets the job done." Tiger Woods also praised Scheffler’s consistency, noting, "Those are some numbers to be proud of.
Incredible consistency all season long. Congrats on a historic season, Scottie." The PGA Tour will now take a two‑week hiatus before launching its FedExCup Fall schedule with the inaugural Biltmore Championship in Asheville, North Carolina, from September 17‑20. Looking ahead, Team USA will aim to extend its Presidents Cup dominance when it hosts the International Team at Medinah a week later, having won the last ten editions of the biennial event.
The upcoming season promises more high‑stakes competition, and fans can follow the action through various streaming platforms and live broadcasts, ensuring the excitement of professional golf continues well into the fall.
