Hull KR head coach Willie Peters has explained why he left Mikey Lewis out of the squad for Saturday's match against Toulouse, stressing that the decision was driven by the need to maintain the club's standards rather than simply serving a suspension. Lewis received a two‑game ban after being charged with Grade C "dangerous contact" when his studs struck Warrington Wolves' Ewan Irwin on the ankle during the rearranged round‑two fixture on Tuesday. Irwin now faces a potential injury lay‑off as he undergoes scans, adding another layer of concern for Sam Burgess' side.
The timing of the ban is notable because the 25‑year‑old had just completed a four‑match suspension for a headbutt in the previous encounter with Warrington. While the disciplinary panel has already handed down the sanctions, they will not take effect until Round 25, meaning that both Lewis and teammate Tevita Pangai Jr were technically eligible to play against Toulouse. Pangai Jr, who was cited three times for "late contact with a passer," also faces a four‑match ban that could jeopardise his future with the Robins after his mid‑season signing. "We have the highest number of points and the most players on the sidelines because of infractions," he noted.
"Some players have acted without repercussions, and without consequences, those actions become a habit." The coach made it clear that the decision was not about personal vendettas but about reinforcing a culture of accountability. "There are moments when actions are not deliberate or malicious, but when they become a pattern, we have to act," Peters explained. "We decided not to select those two players this week because it aligns with the standards we set for ourselves." He believes that this firm stance will benefit the team not just this season but also in the long term, establishing a benchmark for conduct that all players must meet. "If we fail to enforce our standards, regardless of who you are, there must be consequences," Peters concluded.
"That is the message we are sending." While acknowledging that Lewis' absence weakens the side, Peters affirmed that the team performs better when the player is present and adhering to the club's expectations. "We are a stronger side with Mikey in the lineup, as history has shown," he said. "In his first game back, he made several positive contributions, especially on defense." However, Peters also pointed out areas where Lewis still needs improvement.
He emphasized that the coaching staff maintains open communication with the player and is supportive of his development. "Mikey is aware of the aspects of his game that require work, and we are working with him to address those," Peters added. "He will spend a few weeks on the sidelines, and we will monitor his progress. When he aligns with our standards, the team benefits greatly."
