George Russell secured victory in the Dutch Grand Prix Sprint, extending his flawless start to the new Formula 1 season and cutting the points deficit to his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. Starting from pole position, Russell managed to keep the lead after a clean launch, fending off an early challenge from fellow Briton Lando Norris before the McLaren driver was soon overtaken by Charles Leclerc's Ferrari.
Leclerc, running on the softer, more fragile compound compared with the medium tyres chosen by most of the field, executed a daring pass on Norris into the first corner on lap 18 of the short‑format race, moving into second place. Norris, however, was able to defend his position against Antonelli and retain third place, while the championship leader Antonelli claimed fourth after passing Oscar Piastri’s McLaren on the opening lap. The win reduces Russell’s deficit to Antonelli to 56 points, but Antonelli’s overall lead in the drivers’ standings has now stretched to 53 points after Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who started from seventh on the grid, finished exactly where he qualified.
A sudden downpour hit the circuit just as Russell crossed the finish line for his third Sprint win of the year. He admitted that had the rain arrived earlier, the final laps would have been "very sketchy" and potentially dangerous. Finishing fifth, Oscar Piastri stayed close to home favourite Max Verstappen, who was running just ahead of him.
Verstappen, meanwhile, finished sixth, leaving Hamilton 1.6 seconds behind in seventh place. Hamilton will be hoping to improve his setup for the remainder of the weekend after expressing disappointment with his performance in Sprint Qualifying.
Pierre Gasly secured the final point on offer, finishing eighth for Alpine. The Zandvoort weekend now effectively resets, as teams are allowed to modify their cars before the main Grand Prix qualifying session scheduled for 3 pm on Saturday, broadcast live on Sky Sports F1 and Main Event. The provisional finishing order was: 1) George Russell (Mercedes), 2) Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), 3) Lando Norris (McLaren), 4) Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), 5) Oscar Piastri (McLaren), 6) Max Verstappen (Red Bull), 7) Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari), 8) Pierre Gasly (Alpine).
Russell’s performance comes after a period of inconsistency earlier in the season. At the start of July, he had trimmed Antonelli’s lead to 25 points, but over the next two race weekends he fell another 34 points behind his teammate, making a strong showing at Zandvoort essential for the 28‑year‑old. "A great start to the weekend," Russell said after the Sprint. "The Ferraris look really quick, so qualifying this afternoon will be tight.
I knew any overtakes would come toward the end of the race, so I tried to conserve my tyres through the high‑speed corners and keep a little extra fuel for the final stint. When I saw Charles behind, I pushed a bit harder and we pulled away together." Norris, who had dominated the previous race in Hungary, initially appeared to be a threat to Russell but was eventually passed by Leclerc. "Not a bad result, not the best.
It would have been nice to be a little quicker today, but Charles was just too fast," Norris admitted. "I don’t think it was the tyres; we just lacked overall pace and have work to do." Leclerc explained his own strategy, noting, "I saw that Lando didn’t have much deployment on the main straight, so I maximised my exit speed. We arrived at the braking point at roughly the same time, and the move worked out well." The weekend schedule includes a full slate of support races and qualifying sessions.
On Saturday, August 22, the day begins with the F1 Academy Race 1 at 1.30 pm, followed by the Dutch GP qualifying build‑up at 2.15 pm, the main qualifying session at 3 pm, and the Porsche Supercup Race 1 at 5 pm. Sunday, August 23, features the F1 Academy Race 2 at 9.35 am, Porsche Supercup Race 2 at 10.50 am, a Grand Prix build‑up at 12.30 pm, the Dutch Grand Prix start at 2 pm, and the chequered flag ceremony at 4 pm.
