"After a couple of furlongs you could see the race getting messy, and once we passed the three‑furlong marker I realised the pacemaker had disappeared," explained Barry Mahon, Juddmonte’s European racing manager.
"Colin was forced to make his move a little earlier than he had intended. When he saw the pacemaker gone, he had to chase Kalpana down, which inevitably left her vulnerable to a late‑closing opponent.
Yet she showed true grit and knew exactly where the finish line was." Mahon continued, "She lowered her head, gave it everything she had, and got the job done. It wasn’t a pretty victory, but she got the job done, and that’s what matters most. Whether the ground is fast or slow, over twelve furlongs or ten, she would still be competitive. She’s incredibly versatile and now the ultimate professional.
At five years old she’s fully matured and continues to answer every question we ask about her ability – it’s wonderful." Mahon added, "We have the horse from yesterday as well, so we need to decide whether to send him to the Arc and keep Kalpana for Ascot, or perhaps run both.
It’s a pleasant problem to have, but we’ll need to sit down with the owners in the next week or two and hash out the plan." He also noted the ground preferences of the two stars: "Item performed brilliantly on good‑to‑soft ground here yesterday. Interestingly, Colin mentioned that Kalpana doesn’t relish softer ground as much as she did last year; she seemed to prefer the faster ground at Ascot when we last ran her."
