Ahead of this week’s event, McIlroy explained that he is excited to be among the 69 competitors at TPC Southwind and believes it is "important" to take part in the season‑opening Playoffs tournament. "A few different things went into that decision," he said.

"Having four weeks off going into the last two events of the year would probably have been a little too much for me in terms of wanting to stay competitive." The FedExCup Playoffs schedule runs as follows: August 13‑16 for the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee; August 20‑23 for the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri; and August 27‑30 for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.

McIlroy added, "Obviously I want to play well, but it’s also a good week to see where my game is, do a lot of practice, or as much as I can in the heat. I think it’s important to be here. "I’ve had some good conversations with Brian over the last couple of weeks. It’s important for me to be here and show support.

Every week is going to feel a bit like this. It’s going to be hot and sweaty, so you want to be able to conserve energy as well. I’ve always tried to treat it like one big, long golf tournament and get into the rhythm of it and go from there." McIlroy reflected on his past successes in the Playoffs, noting that he has been fortunate to perform well over the years and hopes to add another strong finish to his résumé.
