Mercedes’ technical director, James Allison, has warned that the durability of the team’s 2026 car could prove more decisive than any aerodynamic or power‑unit upgrades in the remaining races of the Formula 1 season. As the sport emerges from a four‑week summer hiatus, the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort marks the first of twelve events still to be contested before the championship concludes. At present, Mercedes sit atop both the drivers’ and constructors’ tables.
Their lead is substantial – Kimi Antonelli enjoys a 50‑point cushion over his nearest rival, while the team itself is 72 points clear of the competition. Yet Allison concedes that these margins would likely be larger if not for a series of reliability setbacks that have plagued the W17 chassis and its power unit during the opening half of the season, a period that coincides with the debut of the sport’s new technical regulations.
"Everyone naturally focuses on upgrades because they're visible and they're exciting, but reliability may end up having a much bigger impact on the championship," Allison said during an appearance on the Mercedes‑run Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show. He explained that while a well‑executed upgrade programme can yield anywhere from ten to twenty points over the course of a year, a single retirement can erase that gain in a single afternoon. Consequently, the team’s primary objective for the second half of the season is to "reduce the self‑inflicted wounds" that have cost them valuable points in the opening rounds. Allison highlighted that the W17 has suffered from issues that, in his view, "simply shouldn't happen" – from power‑unit failures to mechanical gremlins that have forced the car into the garage prematurely.
Addressing these problems, he argued, is arguably more critical than introducing the next batch of aerodynamic parts. "If we can continue to improve the car while also delivering clean execution and reliability, then we'll put ourselves in the strongest possible position for the championship run‑in," he added. Despite the focus on reliability, the team has not abandoned the pursuit of performance. Allison noted that the rate of aerodynamic gain in the wind‑tunnel this year is roughly six or seven times higher than it was under the previous rule set.
This dramatic increase means that Mercedes are already developing a suite of new components aimed at recapturing any advantage lost to rivals such as Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull during the break. "We made a conscious decision before the season to push the first car harder than we've ever pushed one before," Allison explained.
"We left things later than usual and effectively built a programme with almost no contingency. The upside was that we were able to capture as much of that steep development curve as possible before the first race, which is why the car arrived with such a strong level of performance." The downside of that aggressive early approach, however, is now becoming apparent. While other teams finalised their cars earlier and have been able to introduce upgrades throughout the first half of the year, Mercedes expended much of its developmental budget upfront. As a result, they find themselves slightly out of phase with competitors who are currently rolling out new parts.
"We're now slightly out of phase with some of our competitors. They have been introducing upgrades while we've been rebuilding our development pipeline," Allison said.
"What we're seeing is that everyone is making gains at a broadly similar rate. That means the competitive picture can change very quickly." Allison stressed that the team’s objective is to keep its nose ahead of the pack and to ensure that the next wave of upgrades restores the early‑season advantage. In the meantime, Mercedes must endure periods when rivals unveil significant performance gains. Balancing the ongoing development of the current car with the preparation of the 2027 package adds another layer of complexity.
"The difficulty is that development rates are still exceptionally high," Allison admitted. "If you stop too early and your competitors continue finding performance, the final part of the season can become very uncomfortable.
Our job is to judge that moment correctly." Looking ahead, Allison expressed optimism. He cited positive wind‑tunnel data and a robust pipeline of parts still in progress. "There is meaningful performance still to come," he affirmed, underscoring the belief that Mercedes can still extract additional speed while simultaneously tightening up reliability.
Team principal Toto Wolff echoed this sentiment in the official preview for Zandvoort. He acknowledged that the team had left points on the table and that rivals had narrowed the performance gap, but he remained confident that the second half of the year would be decided by execution and the rate of development. "Whilst we are slightly out of step with upgrades compared to our rivals, we have more performance to unlock and a clear development plan to do so," Wolff said. Historically, the Dutch Grand Prix has been a challenging venue for Mercedes.
Lewis Hamilton’s second‑place finish in 2021 remains the team’s best result there, and the circuit has produced no podiums for the Silver Arrows in recent years. Moreover, the track will disappear from the calendar after this season, making it the final opportunity for Mercedes to claim a victory at Zandvoort. Wolff described the circuit as a "unique challenge" with a passionate fan base, noting that while the team has come close, a win has eluded them in the modern era.
