Inter Milan and Tottenham have finalized a £30 million deal for the transfer of English defender Djed Spence. The agreement includes a 10% sell-on clause, as reported by Sky Sports News.
Spence was allowed to travel to Italy for a medical examination while negotiations between the two clubs continued, ultimately leading to a total package worth £30 million. Having been a key player in England's third-place finish at the recent World Cup, Spence's opportunities at Tottenham were expected to be limited due to the presence of Pedro Porro and other capable full-backs.
Inter Milan had been seeking a new right-wing-back option and turned their attention to Spence after failing to secure a deal for Al Ittihad's Moussa Diaby. With three years remaining on his Tottenham contract and an option for an additional year, Spence is eager to make the move, following a successful six-month loan spell with Genoa in Italy.
Tottenham initially signed Spence from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £20 million in July 2022. According to Sky Sports News' Mark McAdam, 'Spurs fans will acknowledge Spence's brilliance, as seen in flashes, including his performances at the World Cup with England. Although they may find it frustrating, considering they paid £12.5 million for him from Middlesbrough in 2022, they are now receiving more than double that amount. Nevertheless, it may not feel like sufficient compensation for a player who could have been crucial for the team.
Tottenham has been preparing for this transfer and has potential replacements in mind.'
