Pundits Slam MCG Pitch as 'Unfair Contest' After 20-Wicket Day

Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook has expressed his concerns over the MCG pitch, labeling it an 'unfair contest' after a dramatic first day of the Boxing Day Ashes Test. The pitch, which had 10mm of grass left on it, saw 20 wickets fall, with England rolling Australia for 152 before being bowled out for 110 in reply. Cook stated, 'This is not a great Test wicket... unless this flattens out on days two, three, and four, if we get there, then that was too heavily weighted in the bowlers' favour.' Fellow pundit Graeme Swann shared similar sentiments, saying the pitch 'did a bit too much' and was 'a little bit unfair.' Michael Vaughan, meanwhile, described the deck as a 'shocker.' The bowlers dominated the day, with Scott Boland registering figures of 3-30 and Michael Neser striking four times. England's Harry Brook top-scored with 41 off 34 balls, but the tourists struggled to cope with the seam-friendly conditions. The pitch is expected to remain a challenge for the batsmen, with the groundsman believing it will not flatten out significantly.
