Sir Gino Claims Christmas Hurdle Title

Sir Gino demonstrated his enduring talent with a victorious comeback in the Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle at Kempton Park. Trainer Nicky Henderson's charge had been absent from competitive action since the Wayward Lad Novices' Chase at the same meeting a year ago, due to a subsequent infection that led to a hospital stay. Following a period of recuperation under the care of the Seven Barrows team, Sir Gino was the 4-7 favourite for his highly anticipated return in a Grade One contest that his esteemed stablemate Constitution Hill had won in each of the past three seasons. After racing with his characteristic enthusiasm throughout, the five-year-old Sir Gino established a six-length lead over reigning Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace, securing an impressive victory. Henderson expressed his relief and admiration for Sir Gino, stating that the horse is 'seriously good' and that his performance was 'frightening'. With this win, Sir Gino has become the general 7-4 favourite for the Champion Hurdle in March, and Henderson believes he has an 'outstanding chance' of winning the race. The trainer is currently undecided about whether to enter Sir Gino in the Champion Hurdle or the Champion Chase, but he is aware that Sir Gino's exceptional jumping ability would be wasted in chases. Meanwhile, trainer Jeremy Scott was pleased with Golden Ace's performance, considering the challenging conditions, and plans to prepare her for a Cheltenham defence in March. In another notable race, Kitzbuhel delivered a superb front-running display to secure Willie Mullins' first victory in the Ladbrokes Kauto Star Novices' Chase. As a Grade Three-winning hurdler and decisive scorer on his chasing debut, Kitzbuhel was the 13-8 favourite and produced a visually impressive two-and-three-quarter-length success. Mullins praised Kitzbuhel's performance, noting that he 'galloped and jumped' with ease, and expressed hope that the horse can maintain this level of performance for the remainder of the season.
