Zanetti: Giving Back to Inter and Empowering the Next Generation of Players

As a player, Javier Zanetti achieved unparalleled success, claiming 16 trophies with Inter Milan and earning 145 caps for Argentina, solidifying his status as one of the greatest defensive players of his era. Now, he is dedicated to helping the next generation of players achieve their own dreams. At 41, Zanetti retired in 2014, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and excellence. As Inter's vice-president, he is committed to creating opportunities for young players, which is why he is serving as an ambassador for the inaugural MagiCup, a global youth football tournament that provides grassroots teams with the chance to compete against elite academy sides. Zanetti's passion for the project stems from his own humble beginnings in Buenos Aires, where he was rejected by his local club as a teenager and had to work with his father, a bricklayer, before eventually joining Inter at the age of 22. "I would have loved to participate in a tournament like this when I was growing up in a poor neighborhood in Argentina," Zanetti tells Sky Sports. The tournament, scheduled to take place in June at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida, will feature U12 and U13 teams from prestigious academies around the world, as well as teams from countries such as Ivory Coast, Ukraine, and Brazil. "Our mission is to provide children with an experience they will remember for a lifetime, and we are one step away from making this dream a reality," adds Zanetti. "I believe that through sports, particularly football, we can transmit valuable lessons and promote inclusion. Bringing together kids from all over the world in a single tournament is a unique opportunity, and it's an honor to be able to bring happiness to so many children around the world." As vice-president of Inter, Zanetti was involved in the appointment of his former teammate Cristian Chivu as head coach, who has led the team to the top of Serie A, defying expectations. Zanetti is delighted with Chivu's performance, saying, "I'm very happy and pleased because I think Cristian deserves this opportunity. Even when we were teammates, Cristian was a very intelligent player, and now he's dedicated himself to coaching." This season, Inter is competing for a third Serie A title in six years, and Zanetti is optimistic about their chances. "I see a very balanced season, especially in Italian football, because there are four or five teams separated by just one point," he says. "The important thing is that Inter always competes, whether in the Champions League or Serie A. We always prove to be competitive, and that certainly brings us closer to success." Zanetti's love for Inter is evident, and he is determined to leave a lasting legacy at the club. "Inter is the club of my heart, the club I'm in love with," he says. "I had offers from Spain and England to play for them, but I stayed at Inter because I really wanted to leave my mark here at this institution." Now, as he continues to serve his beloved Inter, Zanetti is committed to opening doors for the next generation of players and empowering them to achieve their own dreams.
