Davis Riley surged ahead with a seven-under 63, reaching 15 under on Saturday, to claim a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Rocket Classic in Detroit. He concluded his round with back-to-back birdies, sinking a 54-foot putt followed by a 10-footer, which propelled him into a first-place tie with Michael Brennan.
Brennan had a strong round with seven birdies but missed a nine-foot putt, resulting in a bogey on the 18th hole and losing his share of the lead. Rasmus Hojgaard, Chris Kirk, Rickie Fowler, and Cameron Young trail by three shots, while Xander Schauffele is a stroke further back heading into Sunday's final round.
Riley is seeking his third career win and his first since the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, aiming to secure a postseason spot. Having missed 10 cuts, including last week's 3M Open, he currently ranks No 146 in the FedEx Cup standings.
With the Rocket Classic and next week's Wyndham Championship being the last two tournaments before the top 70 advance to the playoffs, Riley had previously had an opportunity to win the season-opening Sony Open but closed with a 71 and finished in a tie for sixth. 'There have been a lot of ups and downs,' Riley said, 'I'm just excited that I've started to put things together and have a chance.' Hojgaard matched the course record with a 61, becoming the third player in as many days to achieve this feat, momentarily taking the lead before Riley's birdies put him ahead. First-round leader Peter Malnati had opened with a 61 but plummeted to 4 under with a 71 and 74.
Hojgaard is vying for his first PGA Tour win after missing the cut in his last three starts, barely making it to the weekend at 3 under in Detroit. Young had matched the course record on the second day, sharing the lead at the halfway stage, but endured a more challenging round on Saturday, carding a 68.
The fourth round of the Rocket Classic will be broadcast on Sunday from 7pm, live on Sky Sports Golf.
