The Southern Brave men's team has finally secured their first win in The Hundred, narrowly defeating the Birmingham Phoenix in a nail-biting contest. The Brave's total of 128 was successfully defended, thanks in large part to the efforts of Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, and Luke Wood, who delivered a stunning performance in the final stages of the game. The Phoenix, who had been cruising at 52-1, collapsed in spectacular fashion, losing three quick wickets to turn the tide of the match. Will Smeed and Rehan Ahmed were among the victims, caught out by the Brave's bowlers as they attempted to accelerate the scoring.
The Phoenix's skipper, Donovan Ferreira, also fell to Archer, leaving his team reeling at 65-4. A brief partnership between Laurie Evans and Mitchell Owen was ended by Marcus Stoinis, who induced a nick from Evans, and when Adil Rashid accounted for Owen, the Phoenix had lost five wickets in 30 balls. Stoinis was instrumental in the Brave's victory, bringing much-needed energy to their innings with his aggressive batting, including back-to-back sixes off Scott Currie. He also bowled 10 consecutive balls for just three runs, stifling the Phoenix's progress and building the pressure that ultimately led to their collapse.
With 15 balls remaining, the game was still in the balance, but a remarkable final five balls from Archer, conceding just two runs, pushed the equation to 29 from the last 10. Sean Dickson hit two sixes off Jordan, but Wood held his nerve to seal the win, claiming two wickets and combining with Rashid for a cool run-out. The Brave's victory keeps them in contention for the latter knockout stages and draws them level with the Phoenix. 'We needed that!' said Meerkat Match Hero Marcus Stoinis.
