Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk is now clear to return to competition after a resolution was reached regarding his doping ban. The 25-year-old Ukrainian winger was suspended for four years in November 2024 after testing positive for meldonium, a banned substance. However, recent changes to the World Anti-Doping Agency's procedures mean that if the same test were conducted today, no charges would be filed due to the low concentration of the substance found.
Mudryk had appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Football Association stated that given the current scientific reporting standards, Mudryk's sample would not have been reported as a positive test, and thus no anti-doping rule violation would have occurred.
As part of the agreement to resolve the appeal, Mudryk accepted responsibility for the anti-doping rule violations and agreed to a period of ineligibility equal to the time he had already served. He is no longer ineligible and can immediately return to competition. Chelsea, who signed Mudryk for £88m in January 2023, welcomed the decision and pledged to support his reintegration into the squad and help him resume his career. Mudryk had made 73 appearances and scored nine goals for Chelsea before his ban.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to return to football, describing his two-year absence as the most difficult period of his career. The decision allows Mudryk to potentially join Xabi Alonso's squad this season, with the option for Chelsea to send him on loan to regain full match fitness.
