Davis Riley carded a 7-under 63 on Saturday to move to 15 under, securing a one-shot lead heading into the final round of the Rocket Classic in Detroit. Riley finished strong with consecutive birdies, sinking a 54-foot putt followed by a 10-footer, which propelled him into a tie for first place with Michael Brennan. However, Brennan's chances were hindered when he missed a 9-foot putt, resulting in a bogey on the 18th hole and losing his share of the lead.
Rasmus Hojgaard, Chris Kirk, Rickie Fowler, and Cameron Young trail by three strokes, while Xander Schauffele is a stroke further back going into Sunday's final round. Riley is striving for his third career victory and his first since the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, which would also secure his spot in the postseason. Having missed 10 cuts, including the recent 3M Open, Riley is currently ranked 146th in the FedEx Cup standings. The Rocket Classic and the upcoming Wyndham Championship are the last two tournaments before the top 70 players advance to the playoffs.
Earlier in the season, Riley had the opportunity to win the Sony Open but closed with a 71, finishing in a tie for sixth place. 'There have been many ups and downs,' Riley stated, 'but I'm excited to have finally put things together and have a chance.' Hojgaard made history by matching the course record with a 61, becoming the third player in as many days to achieve this feat, temporarily taking the lead before Riley's birdies put him ahead.
First-round leader Peter Malnati initially set the pace with a 61 but struggled with a 71 and 74, dropping to 4 under. Hojgaard is seeking his first PGA Tour win after missing the cut in his last three starts, barely making the cut at 3 under in Detroit. Young matched the course record on the second day, sharing the lead at the halfway point, but faced a more challenging round on Saturday, carding a 68.
The fourth round of the Rocket Classic will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Golf on Sunday from 7 pm.
