Glover explained that he took off his shoes to prevent making spike marks on the green while retrieving his ball, rather than making a statement against AimPoint. The incident occurred during the final round of the 3M Open in Minnesota, where Glover drained a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-four 10th hole.
TV commentators had speculated that Glover's actions were a form of protest, but he took to Instagram to set the record straight. Glover stated that his intention was to avoid damaging the green and that he has no issue with the AimPoint technique.
He also mentioned that the United States Golf Association (USGA) and the R&A have allowed players to tap down spike marks since 2019, which has reduced the problem of spike marks on the green. Glover, a vocal critic of AimPoint, emphasized that his actions were not a protest and that he looks forward to competing again, wearing metal spikes, and allowing other players to tap down any marks made by his shoes.
