Esther Henseleit thwarted Chiara Tamburlini's bid for an automatic berth on Team Europe at the Solheim Cup, following an unforgettable finish at the AIG Women’s Open. The race to qualify for Anna Nordqvist’s European squad concluded at Royal Lytham & St Annes on Sunday. Under the current system, the two leading players on the European Solheim Cup points leaderboard and the next six highest‑ranked golfers in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings earned automatic places. Going into the final round, Tamburlini held a narrow 1.1‑point lead over fellow Italian Helen Briem on the points list.
Unfortunately, she missed the cut, effectively surrendering control of her destiny. Henseleit, already assured of a spot via her world ranking, needed a solo second‑place finish or better to overtake Tamburlini. The German golfer delivered a dramatic birdie on the 18th hole, forcing a sudden‑death playoff against Japan’s Shiho Kuwaki.
The playoff extended to a second extra hole, where Henseleit was edged out. The result left her second on the European points list, just behind Charley Hull, and secured her a second consecutive appearance for Team Europe.
Tamburlini fell short by a mere 0.9 points, meaning her only remaining route into the competition is a captain’s pick when Nordqvist finalises the roster on Monday. "I’m happy I gave myself a chance to win and I handled the pressure well, but I was a little unlucky on the second playoff hole," Henseleit reflected. "I gave it everything, and sometimes it just isn’t meant to be." Lottie Woad also had a chance to leapfrog Tamburlini by posting a solo third‑place finish, but she ended tied for sixth, four strokes back. Her Solheim Cup debut was instead secured through her world‑ranking position.
Other automatic qualifiers confirmed were France’s Céline Boutier, Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, and Sweden’s Maja Stark and Linn Grant. Nanna Koerstz Madsen claimed the final world‑ranking slot after Henseleit’s shift in qualification status opened a place. Nordqvist will announce four captain’s selections on Monday, with the live broadcast beginning at 3 p.m.
on Sky Sports Golf and Sky Sports News. The biennial Solheim Cup will be contested at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands from 11‑13 September. "If you’ve performed well this year, you’re very likely to receive a pick," Nordqvist told Sky Sports.
"The only way to guarantee a place is to earn it on the course yourself." Leona Maguire entered the AIG Women’s Open as the highest‑ranked player not already qualified automatically. The Irish star, a former Solheim Cup winner, has struggled with form this season. Spain’s Julia Lopez Ramirez was also the next highest‑ranked non‑qualifier, while Nastasia Nadaud, Ingrid Lindblad, Mimi Rhodes and Helen Briem rounded out the European players inside the world’s top 100. Mimi Rhodes, who missed out on automatic qualification, expressed her feelings after the final round: "I’ve dreamed of the Solheim Cup since I first picked up a club.
Representing Europe would be the highlight of my career – I’d be over the moon." Tamburlini, who has three LET victories in 2024 but a challenging debut season on the LPGA Tour, may still receive a captain’s pick. She opened up to Sky Sports, tears in her eyes: "I want a Solheim Cup spot so badly, but sometimes the desire can actually hurt your performance. My game isn’t terrible; the margins are just incredibly small." Czech player Sara Kouskova made a brief surge into the projected automatic spots with a four‑under‑par 67 in the final round, despite a late three‑stroke slip on the last two holes.
Helen Briem and Agathe Laisne, both LET winners this year, sat just behind Tamburlini on the LET rankings but also exited early from the major. Dewi Weber is ineligible for selection on home soil because she is not a member of the Ladies European Tour. Meanwhile, Madelene Sagstrom, a three‑time Solheim Cup participant and currently inside the world’s top 90, will miss the event due to an upcoming childbirth. The Solheim Cup showdown, where Team Europe hopes to reclaim the trophy, will be broadcast live across all three days on Sky Sports Golf from 11‑13 September.
Golf fans can also stream the action without a contract through Sky Sports’ streaming options.
