James Wade overcame a tough challenge from Jermaine Wattimena, winning 10-7 to progress to the second round of the World Matchplay at Blackpool's Winter Gardens. Wade, the 2007 World Matchplay champion, is seeking to claim the Phil Taylor trophy once again after finishing as runner-up six times. He took an early 4-1 lead, but Wattimena fought back to 5-4.
Wade then regained control, taking three legs in a row to lead 8-4. The match became tense, with breaks of throw traded, but Wade eventually secured the win.
Wade described his performance as 'rubbish,' despite the victory. He will face Ryan Searle, who defeated William O'Connor 10-6, in the next round.
Meanwhile, Gian van Veen impressed with a 10-6 win over Krzysztof Ratajski, thanks to his exceptional finishing. Van Veen will face Wessel Nijman, who dominated Dave Chisnall 10-5. Michael van Gerwen ground out a 10-6 win over Andrew Gilding, while Gary Anderson delivered a stunning performance, averaging under 110 in a 10-2 thrashing of Ryan Joyce. Anderson will take on Jonny Clayton in the next round.
The first round of the World Matchplay Darts continues on Monday with four more matches, including Ross Smith vs. Kevin Doets and Luke Humphries vs. Cameron Menzies.
