Following a disappointing performance at the Open, Scottie Scheffler made a strong comeback at the 3M Open, carding a six-under-par 65. Scheffler, a four-time major champion, trails overnight leader Ben Kohles by three shots. Kohles eagled the final hole to post a score of 62.
Emiliano Grillo, Jackson Koivun, and Gary Woodland are tied at seven under par, one shot ahead of Scheffler. World No 1 Scheffler had a quick turnaround after his tied-fourth finish at Royal Birkdale and started his first round at TPC Twin Cities on the back nine. Despite a slow start, he found momentum, carding birdies on several holes. Scheffler impressed with his putting, ranking second in the field for strokes gained putting.
"Fresh greens are easier than links greens," he said. "I felt like I was on the wrong end of that last week, but today I was able to hole some nice putts and make birdies." Scheffler added that he cannot predict when a good putting day is coming, saying "golf is funny, some days you're hitting your lines and other days it feels like you're doing the same thing and it goes around the hole." Elsewhere, England's Jordan Smith returned to the PGA Tour after a strong finish at Royal Birkdale, recovering from a bumpy start to finish his round at level par.
