A car accident involving San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan occurred in July, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries that will limit his involvement at the start of training camp, according to the team's announcement on Saturday. In Shanahan's absence, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster, along with coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer, will oversee the team, starting with their first practice.
The 49ers organization has released a statement confirming the accident and Shanahan's subsequent limited participation in team activities during his recovery period. As he enters his 10th season as the team's coach, Shanahan is recognized for his exceptional offensive expertise, having led the 49ers to two Super Bowl appearances following the 2019 and 2023 seasons, as well as two NFC title game appearances in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. With a regular season and playoff record of 91-72, Shanahan ranks third in franchise history for wins, behind George Seifert and Bill Walsh.
Despite significant injuries last season, the team finished with a 12-5 record and won a playoff game, with Shanahan finishing fifth in the AP NFL Coach of the Year voting. The 49ers are set to begin their season on September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
