Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Dina Asher-Smith, two of England's top medal contenders, have announced their withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. They are joined by fellow Olympic medallists Matthew Hudson-Smith and Daryll Neita, as well as Amber Anning, Zac Sneddon, Anna Purchase, Elliot Giles, and Jona Efoloko, who have all withdrawn on the eve of the opening ceremony.
Johnson-Thompson expressed her disappointment, stating that she is "gutted" to miss the games due to an injury that has not fully healed, and will instead focus on preparing for the European Championships later this season. The reason for Asher-Smith's withdrawal has not been disclosed, but it is speculated that she may be prioritizing the upcoming European Championships in Birmingham. This development follows a series of withdrawals by top athletes, including Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, who chose not to pursue selection for the Glasgow Games, and international stars such as Kaylee McKeown and Summer McIntosh. England netball star Natalie Metcalf has also withdrawn due to a calf injury and has been replaced by Ella Clark.
