England's Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Dina Asher-Smith, both prominent medal contenders, have announced their withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Johnson-Thompson, a gold medalist in the heptathlon at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham games, cited an injury that has not fully healed, preventing her from competing at her best. Asher-Smith, who was set to participate in the relays, has also pulled out, although the reason for her withdrawal has not been disclosed. They are joined by fellow Olympic medalists Matthew Hudson-Smith and Daryll Neita, as well as Amber Anning, Zac Sneddon, Anna Purchase, Elliot Giles, and Jona Efoloko, all of whom have withdrawn from the competition.
Johnson-Thompson expressed her disappointment, stating that she is prioritizing her recovery to ensure she can perform optimally at the upcoming European Championships. The withdrawals have raised concerns about the demanding schedule of athletic events, with several leading athletes opting not to participate in the Glasgow Games to focus on other championships. Notable international athletes, including Olympic swimming medalists Kaylee McKeown and Summer McIntosh, have also withdrawn from the Games.
Meanwhile, England netball star Natalie Metcalf has pulled out due to a calf injury and has been replaced by Ella Clark.
