Birmingham Phoenix's top order unleashed a phenomenal display of batting, leading their team to a decisive 10-run win over Trent Rockets on Friday evening at Edgbaston. The home crowd was treated to an electrifying contest that saw 29 sixes across both innings, as the Rockets, chasing a target of 215, briefly threatened to make history in The Hundred. After a strong powerplay, Rockets' openers Ben Duckett and Finn Allen amassed 54 unbroken runs, keeping up with the required rate.
However, Phoenix's overseas star Usman Tariq intervened, inducing a skewed lofted drive from Allen that was caught by Scott Currie at long-on. Duckett continued to push forward but was eventually dismissed by a beautiful delivery from Currie that jagged off the pitch to find the edge. With both openers falling just shy of a half-century, the Rockets lost momentum in the middle phase of their innings.
Tariq showcased his impressive skills to keep the Rockets in check, with the key dismissal of Tim David for just 2, caught behind by Clarke, as their chase lost steam. Clarke's 33-ball 68, featuring seven fours and four sixes, was a masterclass in stroke-making. After his dismissal with the score on 104, Rehan Ahmed stepped up to strike five sixes, accompanied by a brutal cameo from skipper Donovan Ferreira, whose nine-ball stay included three clubbed maximums to take the innings tally up to 17, the joint highest in the tournament's history. The Phoenix's collective brilliance was evident, with Smeed's strike rate of 182 for his 28-ball 51 being the lowest across their top six.
