Darren Lehmann has expressed his support for Justin Langer to become the next England Test coach, after revealing he has not been approached for the position. Langer is now the frontrunner for the role, following Brendon McCullum's departure and Andy Flower's decision not to return due to his commitments with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and London Spirit.
Lehmann, who coached Australia to a 5-0 Ashes win in 2013-14, stated that while he is happy coaching Northamptonshire, he would consider the England role if approached. However, he believes the England hierarchy may have already made their decision.
Langer, who succeeded Lehmann as Australia coach, oversaw Ashes retention in 2019 and a 4-0 win in 2021-22, but resigned in 2022 amidst reports of a fallout with senior players. If approached, Langer would face a similar dilemma to Flower, as he holds posts with Lucknow Super Giants and Manchester Super Giants.
Lehmann praised Langer's coaching abilities, saying he would be a 'really good coach' for England, who have a talented pool of players. England ODI captain Harry Brook hopes a new Test coach will be appointed before the Pakistan series, which starts on August 19.
