Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks has been named the NBA Rookie of the Year, beating out his former Duke teammate Kon Knueppel. Flagg achieved numerous records for a teenager in the NBA, including becoming the first rookie to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals since Michael Jordan in the 1984-85 season. This impressive performance was enough to secure the award despite the Mavericks' difficult season, while Knueppel contributed to the Charlotte Hornets' significant improvement.
Flagg and Knueppel were the top two rookie scorers, a feat last achieved by former college teammates Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon in 2004-05. Philadelphia's VJ Edgecombe was also a finalist for the award. When asked about his rivalry with Knueppel, Flagg expressed his admiration for his former teammate, stating that he watched Knueppel's games not only as a competitor but also as a fan.
