Get the inside scoop on Formula 1's revamped Sprint weekend format for the 2026 season. Six out of 24 race weekends will feature the Sprint format, including newcomers Canada, the Netherlands, and Singapore, as well as the returning British Grand Prix.
The Sprint format, introduced in 2021, aims to inject more excitement into the racing action on select tracks known for their overtaking opportunities. The revised schedule includes a unique qualifying session on Friday, followed by a 100km Sprint race on Saturday, offering crucial additional world championship points. The weekend kicks off with a single one-hour free practice session on Friday, followed by Sprint Qualifying.
Saturday's action begins with the 100km Sprint contest, followed by full Qualifying to set the grid for Sunday's Grand Prix. Notably, the Friday session to determine the Sprint grid will adhere to the same knockout rules as full Qualifying but with shorter durations to address engine and tyre concerns.
The key difference between Sprint Qualifying and full Qualifying lies in the restrictions on tyre usage, with drivers only allowed to use one set of tyres in each part of Sprint Qualifying. For the 2026 season, the points system for the Sprint remains unchanged, with a total of 36 points on offer for the top eight finishers.
The Sprint format allows for limited pit stops, and drivers can choose their preferred tyre compound. Teams also have the opportunity to make setup changes to their cars between the Sprint and the Grand Prix, as the parc ferme restrictions are lifted after the Sprint.
With the Miami Grand Prix marking the season's second Sprint weekend, fans can look forward to an action-packed weekend of racing, live on Sky Sports F1.
