Former England international and Chelsea club captain Millie Bright has announced her retirement from football, effective immediately. The 32-year-old defender had previously stepped down from international duties in 2025 and has now decided to end her playing career altogether, stating that she is "ready to bid farewell to football".

Bright had received offers to extend her playing career with another Women's Super League club and a non-playing role at Chelsea, but has opted to explore new opportunities. She has been open about the mental health challenges she faced in the modern game and the impact of social media abuse.

Bright began her career at Chelsea in 2015, signing from Doncaster Belles, and went on to break the Women's Super League all-time appearance record. She is also Chelsea's record appearance maker, with 314 appearances and 19 goals, winning all eight of the club's WSL titles to date. Across her 12-year tenure at Chelsea, Bright won a total of 20 trophies.

In a statement, Bright said: "Representing Chelsea for the past 12 years has been an honor, but I'm now ready to move on from playing football. I've given my all, and I never wanted to play for any other team. It's time for me to enter a new era, and I'm excited to remain involved with Chelsea in a different capacity." The club has announced that Bright will stay on as a trustee of their foundation, continuing her work in supporting others. Bright's illustrious career will be celebrated at Chelsea's final WSL match of the season against Manchester United.

She was a key member of England's Euro 2022 winning team and captain of the Lionesses at the World Cup the following year, earning 88 caps and an OBE for her leadership and impact on the game. Sky Sports pundits have praised Bright's career, with Anton Toloui stating that she will be remembered as one of England's greatest ever center-backs, and Laura Hunter noting that she has done her time and will be celebrated as a stalwart for club and country.
