Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is urging the FIA to ensure that the new power unit development rules for the 2026 season do not disrupt the competitive balance in Formula 1. The regulations include a performance-balancing measure that allows manufacturers trailing the leader by a certain margin to develop their engines. Wolff emphasizes that the goal of this measure is to enable teams to catch up, not to overtake.
He stresses that the FIA must implement the rules with precision, clarity, and transparency to prevent any potential impact on the championship. With Mercedes dominating the early stages of the season, Wolff's team is likely to be the benchmark for other manufacturers to catch up with. However, he suggests that only one engine manufacturer, Honda, needs assistance. Wolff warns that any decisions regarding the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) must be made with the right spirit and without gamesmanship.
He hopes that the FIA will prioritize the integrity of the sport and prevent any team from leapfrogging others through ADUO. The FIA is expected to provide more clarity on the implementation of the rules ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
