The controversy began when Van Veen won a disputed match, prompting Littler to react angrily after his opponent turned towards him while throwing match darts. Van Veen later claimed that Littler was 'out of order' for 'celebrating towards the crowd'.

As a result, Littler was met with boos as he took to the stage for each of his three matches in his run to the final on Night 11 in Rotterdam, where he faced Van Veen's home crowd. Once again, Littler was not given a warm welcome in Liverpool, but he defied the crowd at the M&S Bank Arena by defeating Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, and Jonny Clayton to claim his fifth nightly win. This victory has left him just three points behind Clayton in the top spot, with four regular weeks remaining. However, Littler believes they have both moved on from the incident and is looking forward to settling their differences on stage when they meet again. 'Maybe he's waiting for me to talk to him, but I'm not that type of person. We can settle it on the dartboard. In the practice room, it's been normal, just the usual preparation.' Littler does not regret his actions and is focused on his game, stating that he and Van Veen have both moved on from the incident.
