However, he bounced back with two resounding victories in Dubai. Sent off as the 4-1 third favourite, Charlie Appleby's charge took the lead under William Buick and set the pace throughout.
Last year's Irish Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner, Field Of Gold, who was the even-money favourite, launched a challenge from behind but ultimately finished second, ahead of the previously unbeaten Zeus Olympios. Neither Field Of Gold nor Zeus Olympios ever threatened Opera Ballo, who won by a comfortable margin of three lengths. Appleby noted that the decision to take the lead was made in the absence of a pace angle, and Buick's ride was instrumental in the victory. The plan is to step Opera Ballo up to nine furlongs for the Prix d'Ispahan.
Meanwhile, Roger Varian's Saddadd produced a remarkable comeback to win the bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes, opening up exciting possibilities. The four-year-old, who won the London Gold Cup at Newbury and a valuable handicap at Sandown last season, was a 2-1 shot and delivered a well-timed challenge under Ray Dawson to beat King Of Cities by a length and three-quarters. Varian praised Saddadd's delightful attitude and hinted at potential Group One ambitions, with the Champion Stakes at Ascot a long-term target.
Black Star Boy, trained by Ed Walker, also caught the eye with an impressive victory in the bet365 Handicap, potentially booking his ticket to bigger days and a possible trip to Royal Ascot.
